Hi Charles - I thought you would want to know about this -- although it's really no more than a minor annoyance.
Overall, V File Viewer runs fine in Windows 8.1 except at the start of day when many programs and processes are all launching at the same time.
Under some circumstance (that I can't reliably reproduce), V starts to load, then goes into a loop while searching for system drive devices.
Once V hits this loop, it will just sit there using CPU cycles and never finish. I use the Task Manager to kill off the program and restart it.
It always launches correctly the second time. Attached (if I did this correctly) is a screen shot of V in the 'frozen' position.

In your screenshot, what are the drives that do not have a name next to them? Are they local drives? Are they mapped network drives?Under some circumstance (that I can't reliably reproduce), V starts to load, then goes into a loop while searching for system drive devices.
If possible, please post another screenshot of what the listing should look like.
Next time you have the problem, please let V run a bit longer (up to 5 minutes) just to see if it comes back to life.
Also, select Send Error Report from the Help menu and send me any V.log files that are listed.
Re: V Hangs During Startup in Windows 8.1
The machine is a Sony Vaio AW290. The 'missing' drives are an assortment of types (screen shot below). Their descriptions are as follows:
D: The second internal hard drive.
E: An SD camera chip slot (full).
H: An external hard drive -- USB attached.
S: A memory stick slot (empty).
T: A Compact Flash camera chip slot (empty).
Follow-up: After several re-boots, I was able to induce the V Hang-up behavior.
This time there were no external devices attached. And, I did let it continue to run for over ten minutes. The looping program did not eventually stop running.

Re: V Hangs During Startup in Windows 8.1
Thanks for all the details - I have a few more questions:
What do you mean by hangs?
Can you move or resize the V window?
Does the V main menu work?
Does the Windows Task Manager show that V is not responding?
Are you running the 32 or 64 bit version of V?

What do you mean by hangs?
V goes into a processing loop using about 48% of the CPU. It appears to be searching for something that it never finds.
Can you move or resize the V window?
No. It's completely locked up.
Does the V main menu work?
No.
Does the Windows Task Manager show that V is not responding?
Yes.
Are you running the 32 or 64 bit version of V?
64-bit.
Clarification: I want to make it clear that this issue is strictly related to Windows 8.1. In contrast, V never had any problems under Windows 8.0 -- from the first Beta through the production release.

OK. I will look into it. I may send you a diagnostic version if I don't get anywhere.I want to make it clear that this issue is strictly related to Windows 8.1
Please select Send Error Report from the Help menu and send me any V.log files - they may contain some clues.
